As aplicações são referidas como aplicações para trabalhos leves, médios ou pesados. Essas classificações são, de certa forma, subjetivas, mas os níveis de trabalho são geralmente caracterizados pelos seguintes critérios.
Cilindros para trabalhos leves
Os cilindros para trabalhos leves, como aqueles utilizados para equipamentos fixos internos em uma fábrica, podem ser caracterizados por:
- Pressões de sistema de até 160 bar (2 300 psi)
- Temperaturas de até 70 °C (160 °F)
- Picos de pressão raros excedendo a pressão do sistema
- Cargas laterais mínimas atuando nas guias
- Ambiente com variações de temperatura moderadas e relativamente livres de contaminantes
Cilindros para trabalhos médios
Os cilindros para trabalhos médios, como os de equipamentos agrícolas fora de estrada, podem ser caracterizados por:
- Pressões de sistema de até 250 bar (3 625 psi)
- Temperaturas de até 90 °C (195 °F)
- Picos de pressão moderados excedendo a pressão do sistema
- Cargas laterais moderadas atuando nas guias
- Ambiente com variações de temperatura com contaminantes externos típicos, como poeira e umidade
Cilindros para trabalhos pesados
Os cilindros para trabalhos pesados, como os de equipamentos florestais ou escavadeiras, podem ser caracterizados por:
- Pressões de sistema de 400 bar (5 800 psi) ou mais
- Temperaturas superiores a 90 °C (195 °F), com picos excedendo 110 °C (230 °F)
- Picos de pressão regulares excedendo a pressão do sistema
- Cargas laterais pesadas atuando sobre as guias, em geral, devido a componentes pesados e/ou altas acelerações
- Ambientes difíceis com amplas variações de temperatura e típicos contaminantes externos rigorosos
